This picture ( and the motivation to start doing a section on the TX7 ) came from Oliver Sacker.

In late 1984, Yamaha started to produce a 'table-top' version of the Yamaha DX7. In many respects, it was exactly the same as the DX7, having enough space to store 32 sounds which could be played via MIDI.

Many 'performance' features such as pitch bend, portamento etc can be edited on the TX7, but you cannot create original, or edit existing patches on it - to do this, you would either need to hook it up to a PC and use software like DX manager, or connect it to a DX 7, 5 or 1.   Unlike the DX7, the TX7 has a cassette interface, allowing you to load sounds to and from the unit ( that's if you can actually get your hands on a data cassette!)

You can download a manual from Yamaha's Manual Library, which is here.

You should be able to pick up a TX7 for around £45 / $90.   Please be aware though, they do tend to produce more 'hiss' than a DX7 - something you can minimise by setting its volume to maximum, whilst turning down the input volume to suit on a mixer.
